Yixing Teapots

Choosing teapots is now a lot more complicated than it would have been hundreds of years ago. Nowadays, people can purchase teapots in all kinds of different materials, all kinds of shapes and all kinds of sizes. One of the types of teapots that have managed to stand the test of time are the Yixing Teapots.

Owning one of the high quality Yixing teapots is something that is going to be part of history. Historically, this is one of the best ways to create the perfect brew and any teapot enthusiast is going to want one of these in their collection. The quality of the Zisha clay means that Yixing Teapots are among the best teapots ever to come out of China.

It was not until after the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that these pots really came into use. A lot of things were already boiled and cooked in similar pots, but nobody had thought that these pots might have been suitable for tea. Before long, many variations of the Yixing teapots were produced. This was something that turned out to stay with China for many years to come, with exports going all over the world.

The unique design and construction of Yixing teapots really comes from how they are built, not why they were built. They have thousands of small air holes, which actually help with heat retention. The heat retention of the Yixing teapots means that instead of boiling up tea quickly and intensely, there is a calm and slow process that needs to be used. This manages to extract the maximum amount of flavor from the tea leaves that are inside.

Brewing tea using Yixing Teapots is extremely simple as with most other teapots. Once the water is heated and the tea is added the steeping process has begun. Some tea leaves take around 1-2 minutes to steep, but others can take up to 30 minutes depending on their quality. It is important to know which tea leaves are being used and how long they need to steep for.

The best way to clean Yixing Teapots is to use boiling water. Many people suggest boiling up water and flushing it through the tea pot. Repeat this process several times. Many people choose to soak the teapot, but this is not as efficient as actually flushing boiling water through it. Wiping around the teapot to agitate any lose parts will also be useful before flushing it with water.
