Green tea is the type of tea that we get from mildly oxidized Camellia leaves. Green tea is therapeutic and healing. But most of us do not know green tea is also used in powdered form in Japan and is very popular with Japanese people. This powdered form of green tea is known as Matcha.

A proper shade is built where these leaves are supposed to grow, due to this the growth process becomes slow since the leaves do not get direct sunlight, and this makes them dark in color. This shaded system also starts the production of amino acid and thus the leaves become naturally sweet.


Once harvested only fine quality leaves are selected and laid flat to dry. Once dried out properly and crumbled the leaves are de-stemmed and grinded finely so that it turns out in to a fine powdered like form that we call Matcha. The more the leaves produce amino acid the more will be the sweetness of the leaves and the taste will be deeper. There are a number of ways in which Matcha can be used apart from being used as a drink. Matcha is used as a flavoring in desserts, cakes, pastries, pudding, mousses etc.

If you are in Japan you can even encounter green tea ice-creams and they taste great. If you are not a fan of drinking simple green tea you can even try green tea flavored lattes that are available at the Japanese coffee spots. Big and renowned brands like Starbucks have also started to introduce green tea flavored coffee.
