Gunpowder Green Tea
Gunpowder Green Tea is a form of Chinese green tea, which is generally rolled into small round pellets in order to extract the most flavor possible. The name is incredibly simple, and it actually shows a lot of resemblance to the black power grains that can be found in black tea. Many other forms of tea are used in round pellets, including the likes of Oolong tea and many other forms of dried green tea.
The history relating to gunpowder green tea is incredibly extensive and goes back many years. According to history, its existence dates back to 618, although it did not gain major popularity until it was used regular in Taiwan in the 19th century.
Processing gunpowder green tea is actually quite complicated. The best tea will be withered. Once it has been withered it will then be steamed, rolled and finally dried. This process is said to be the best when it comes to locking in the flavor. Unlike ancient times, the leaves are now rolled using machines, rather than being rolled by hand, simply because the process is much quicker. Of course, gourmet versions can still rolled by hand.
The reason behind rolling gunpowder green tea is simply to hold in all the flavors. Chopping up the leaves is likely to damage or break the leaves and this will make them lose both flavor and their smell. Along side this, it allows the higher quality teas to be aged over time, which offers a distinct flavor.
Gunpowder green tea is generally exported to the Maghreb these days, where it can be used to prep North African mint tea, which is full of flavor. This kind of tea is still extremely popular over there and is drunken at most social gatherings, regardless of the occasion.
Selecting the perfect gunpowder green tea is certainly not an easy process. Buyers need to look out for the shiny pellets on offer. Pellets that are dull in color are not likely to be fresh and will have lost a lot of their flavor. The size of the pellet is also extremely important. The larger the pellets are, generally, the lower the quality the tea is likely to be, as the pellets have not been rolled tightly to lock in the maximum amount of flavor.
The brewing techniques related to gunpowder green tea are extremely varied. Over time, different cultures have developed their own methods for brewing the best tea, so each brewing technique is down to individual preference. Generally though each leaf will be enough to add 150ml of water. This will be brewed in temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees celsius. All teapots used in the brewing process should be pre-warmed to ensure that the maximum amount of flavor is extracted. If the tea is brewed correctly, then the taste should be something of a thick honey like taste. Of course, each person will have their own preference relating to exactly how they like their own tea.
