Chai Tea Spices

Spiced tea, also famous as Masala chai, is one of the most favorite beverages, not only in India where it originates, but also across the globe. The whole concept of introducing a variety of spices to tea dates back to the days of the Indian ancestor. Since then, experimentation through generations and family traditions caused variations in the flavor of the tea. There are various different types of Chai Tea Spices available, which can add extra zing, flavor, aroma and taste to your tea. Mentioned here are some of the most basic chai tea spices that can be a part of almost every spiced tea these days.

Cardamom Cardamom is highly regarded for its aromatic characteristics. Hence, cardamom seed pods are used in the chai tea spices mixture for its distinctive fragrance and flavor. The green pods are crushed, and then roasted. After that, one has to boil it; this will result in a rewarding flavor of the spice. Green cardamom is often available in Asian, especially Indian markets. Locally it is termed "elaichi".

Cinnamon The characteristic properties of cinnamon pungent, rich and tannic makes it a mandatory inclusion in the important chai tea spices list. Generally, cinnamon sticks are used, in comparison to cinnamon powders. An alternative of cinnamon, cassia is common in the USA.

Ginger To add a distinctive hot yet sweet taste to your Masala Chai, you need to use ginger. The fresh and finely chopped variety can yield better results; although, crystallized ginger can also be a replacement. In some places, a pinch of powdered ginger is also prevalent.

Cloves To add an incredible taste and depth to your spiced tea, an intensely spicy variety of cloves is necessary. In fact, owing to the use of cloves, the tea can have added sweetness and creaminess. Both forms of cloves, whole and powdered, are extensively used for the preparation of the best variety of spiced tea.

Peppercorn Even though it is one of the least popular amongst all the chai tea spices, piquant peppercorns are necessary to add a characteristic blend and flavor. Some people believe this spice is as important as the other ones, and spice teas are incomplete without them. The most used version of peppercorn is whole black peppercorn. In case you are interested in achieving a milder blend and flavor, you can consider using green or white peppercorn.
