Tea has been used for at least 3000 years, with the first recorded use in China. Its use slowly spread throughout the world and arrived in Europe around the 17th century. Tea became very popular in Britain during the 18th century, largely thanks to economics. At the time ships were exporting fabrics made in Britain to India and China, and were coming back only partly laden. To solve this problem, tea was promoted as the drink of choice for all. Thanks to the success of this campaign, the ships came back fully loaded with tea. Tea played another important role in the history of Britain and its relations with the USA, with its part in the Boston Tea Party - a direct action by protestors against Britain, which helped lead to the American Revolution.
Tea comes in many different forms. In the West black teas are the more popular, and in the East green teas are favored. This color refers to the color of the tea leaves prior to the drink being prepared. These teas all come from the family of Camellia sinensis plants, and there are also many different types of herbal teas.
The tea drink is prepared by steeping (brewing) the tea leaves in hot water. Many people prefer the convenience of tea bags, but the use of loose leaf teas is again growing in popularity. When using loose leaf teas a way of separating the tea leaves from the tea drink is often required, which can add to the time spent preparing the tea, yet it allows for a greater control over the final taste of the tea, and greater variety.
